German Shepherd Dogs
The name is derived from the three AMAZING von Sontausen dogs I received from Julia Priest.
Rixi von Sontausen (Ri), Zinka von Sontausen (zi) and Canyon Wren von Sontausen (en).
Purpose-bred German Shepherd Dogs for active, experienced homes.
von Rizien is a small working German Shepherd breeding program focused on health, temperament, environmental confidence, and clear-headed working ability. Our goal is not to produce dogs for everyone. Our goal is to produce dogs with the stability, drive, nerve, and trainability needed for appropriate working, sport, search and rescue, and active companion homes.
Every breeding decision is made with intention. We look beyond appearance and pedigree. We evaluate temperament, structure, health, work ethic, resilience, handler engagement, and the ability to recover and think under pressure.
A good working dog is not just energetic. A good working dog is confident, stable, trainable, adaptable, and able to use its drive productively.
Our puppies are raised with purpose, evaluated thoughtfully, and placed carefully.
von Rizien was created from a deep respect for the German Shepherd Dog as a true working breed.
Our breeding program is shaped by real-world working dog experience, including search and rescue, detection, obedience, field work, and handler development. We value dogs that are confident in new environments, socially appropriate, physically sound, mentally resilient, and capable of learning through clear communication.
We believe responsible breeding requires more than producing puppies. It requires planning, honesty, education, follow-through, and a commitment to the dogs for their entire lives.
Our goal is to help each puppy land in a home where it can succeed.
That means we do not place puppies based only on color, sex, or buyer preference. We evaluate each puppy as an individual and consider the needs, goals, experience level, and lifestyle of each potential home.
A von Rizien dog should be more than beautiful. It should be sound, stable, capable, and well-matched to its purpose.
Our breeding philosophy is simple: purpose matters.
German Shepherd Dogs were developed to be intelligent, athletic, versatile working dogs. Preserving those traits requires thoughtful breeding, honest evaluation, and a willingness to prioritize long-term quality over short-term demand.
We breed for dogs that are:
Mentally stable
Environmentally confident
Physically sound
Socially appropriate
Handler engaged
Trainable
Resilient
Clear in drive
Capable of work
Able to recover from stress
We do not believe “high drive” alone makes a good working dog. Drive without clarity can become frustration. Confidence without biddability can become conflict. Sensitivity without resilience can become avoidance. A balanced working dog needs the right combination of genetics, structure, early development, training, and placement.
Our goal is to produce German Shepherds that can function in the real world.
That means dogs that can handle new places, strange surfaces, unexpected sounds, travel, people, pressure, problem-solving, and appropriate work. Whether a puppy goes into search and rescue, sport, detection, active companionship, or another suitable path, the foundation should be a stable temperament and a capable mind.
We are honest about each breeding. No pairing is perfect. Each dog has strengths and weaknesses. Responsible breeding means understanding both.
